Dead of January Concert Recommendations!
I have fallen behind in posting my weekly concert recommendations with it being the holidaze and yucky winter slosh (the SAD) and spending too much time curled up in bed with a special someone instead of trekking out and listening to new tunes. I had some recommendations for New Year’s Eve and last week, but it really makes no sense to go back in time and post them now, does it? Let’s just put it on the record that Ariel Pink’s New Year’s Eve show in Bushwick was a joke and a waste of money. I could have karaoked better over his songs than he did. I said it once, and I’ll say it again: Ariel Pink is a lousy salad tosser. That said, I have a couple of good ones for this coming week.
Mercury Lounge
Wed. January 19
Riding the “chillwave” crest and emerging triumphantly near the top of the crusty pile is Columbia, South Carolina’s Toro Y Moi. 24 year-old Chaz Bundick produces expertly crafted layers of R&B vocals, funk, synthesizers and fuzz for a sound that is ideal for playing hooky and shirking responsibilities. Cloud Nothings combine the best of skuzzy guitars, fuzzy keyboards and punky vocals resulting in lively and carefree rock.
Merkin Concert Hall
Thursday January 20
Avant-Electro-Pop master Dan Deacon collaborates with classically trained percussion quartet So Percussion for a special night of musical innovation at NYU’s Merkin Concert Hall. Kicking off this week, the Ecstatic Music Festival aims to re-define contemporary music by bringing together “collaborations exploring the fertile terrain between classical and popular music.” Seriously, a wonderful opportunity to see Dan Deacon as the serious composer he always intended to be and to reconsider your definition of classical music. Still curious? Check out this video for more information.
Nightlands, (The) Tony Castles, Dustin Wong
Glasslands Gallery
Thursday January 20
Philadelphia’s Nightlands (Dave Hartley) creates self-described “dream science,” a suitable description for the ethereal layers and melodic, choral vocals that result in an almost transcendental listening experience. Initially starting as a side project to keep track of his dreams, Nightlands morphed into a full-fledged musical endeavor with an outcome nothing short of breathtaking. Kultur Succubus’ friend Jordan did this pretty nifty video for Brooklyn’s (The) Tony Castles, a band that likes to keep it pretty sexy. Oh! and we can’t forget Dustin Wong, member of Ponytail (RIP), going solo with some experimentally calculated guitar love.
Total Lunar Eclipse. Happy Solstice!
Oh dear god. This is my life.

Concert Recommendations 11/8-11/12
Wednesday Dec. 8
Town Hall
Words seem to come up short when trying to describe the essence of Will Oldham, better known as Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy. Having gone by countless monikers over the years and putting out dozens upon dozens of records, EPs and compilations, Oldham has also been known to moonlight as an actor, comedian and even photographer. Still, music is obviously his primary passion and he continues to deliver stunning folk/Americana tunes with quirky lyrics; the likes of which make you want to lay in bed all day listening and trying to uncover the eccentricities that lie behind them. For all the folks that missed Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy’s series of intimate shows at Monster Island Basement this past April (like my bff and I did, hosting a sad record-listening party in my living room as a consolation prize), Wednesday’s show at Town Hall is a can’t miss opportunity to see this living legend perform.

Wednesday Dec. 8
Bar Matchless
Danielle “Danz” Johnson is the 21-year-old woman behind Computer Magic. A blogger, DJ and graphic designer, Danz just started posting songs to Soundcloud this year and digitally self-released two EP’s. Creating low-fi bedroom synth-pop, her songs are amazingly well crafted and thoughtful while remaining a lot of fun to listen to. Her voice is gorgeous and unique with just the right amount of dreamy longing inflected throughout; I am recently obsessed! My prediction is that Computer Magic is going blow up big, you can say you saw her when.
Sat. Dec 11
The Bell House
Atlas Sound is the solo-project of Deerhunter’s Bradford Cox. Having found success and critical acclaim in Atlanta-based Deerhunter, his Atlas Sound project continues to gain attention. With a sound that is more stripped down, Bradford Cox proves his talent and songwriting ability with songs that are richly layered, pensive and melodious.
Sunday Dec. 12
Music Hall of Williamsburg
Chances are, you remember the first time you heard “Fuck the Pain Away” by Peaches. For ten years Peaches has been delivering her nasty, sexy electroclash and never ceasing to inject our ho-hum lives with a little dose of much needed shock value. Sunday she performs her opera Peaches Christ Superstar, a production loosely based off of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s legendary Jesus Christ Superstar. With accompaniment by rapper Chilly Gonzales, Peaches plays the roles of both Jesus and Mary Magdalene in a performance that was nearly shut down by German authorities.
Jeff Mangum Plays Secret Show in Bushwick!

Saturday night, legendary Neutral Milk Hotel frontman Jeff Mangum played a secret, last-minute show at The Schoolhouse in Bushwick (a venue, I recently mentioned is a new favorite). This was Mangum’s second performance in ten years! He played ten Neutral Milk Hotel songs for a small, lucky crowd of about 75. I, unfortunately, was not cool enough to find out about it. My bro, Ric Leichtung has the details and five songs from the show up at his blog International Tapes. Thanks Ric!
I can say that it does all really make sense now…?
Don’t wet yourself, I got more concert recommendations!!! 12/1-12/7
So, had to take a break last week due to it being Thanksgiving and it being kind of a slow week and knowing full well that food comas, knitting and drinking away one’s sorrows were truly at the forefronts of everyone’s mind. This week is kind of slow as well with every show worth seeing happening on Friday night. WBAR Winter Formal at Columbia University and Dark Disco at Music Hall of Williamsburg get honorable mentions, but my money is on Laurel Halo.
Dec. 3
Knitting Factory
Kurt Vile may be single-handedly driving Philadelphia’s experimental music scene. After self-releasing countless CD-R’s recorded in his bedroom, Vile has continually put out an impressive body of work for Woodsist and Matador records. Vile infuses his low-fi brand of psychedelia with sunny Americana for a sound that is instantly classic and effortlessly rock and roll.
Monster Island Double Feature with Laurel Halo
Dec. 3
Monster Island Basement
Pack your Friday night schedule with a double feature at Williamsburg’s Monster Island Basement. Starting at 7, a slew of DJs, including DJ Dog Dick, (don’t pretend you’ll forget that name anytime soon) and experimental musicians perform original compositions to a series of short films. After 10pm, Laurel Halo celebrates the release of her new record “King Felix.” This Brooklyn-by-way-of-Michigan lady layers her ethereal vocals over beats that are unexpected, somehow melding upbeat and gothy into one seamless sound.
Concert Recommendations 11/19-20
It’s true that I may be a lazy bum, but I try to try. Here are some shows that I think may be worth checking out. I wish there were more of me.
The Beets, Total Slacker, The Babies
Friday Nov. 19
285 Kent Ave
This Friday night’s show is basically a who’s who of Brooklyn-based garage rock bands favored by the hipster/Todd P set. The Beets play jangly 60s-inspired guitar rock with lots of reverb and minimalistic drumming. Total Slacker’s plodding rhythms are amped up by front man Tucker Rountree’s off the cusp live jam-outs. The Babies are the most melodic of the group featuring members from The Vivian Girls and Woods.
SLEEP ∞ OVER, La Big Vic
Friday Nov. 19
La Tortilleria Los Hermanos
Los Hermanos Tortilla Factory may be the perfect place for a show. You can fill your ever-constant taco craving, BYOB and watch some bands make their magic under the glowing green and red lights. Playing on Friday at Tortillas on the Creek, a monthly benefit for the grossly polluted Newtown Creek, is Austin’s dreamy witch house lady trio SLEEP ∞ OVER. Brooklyn’s La Big Vic create luscious and trippy electronic soundscapes accompanied by chimerical vocals.
Wham City Comedy Tour with Dan Deacon
Saturday Nov. 20
Showpaper 42nd St Gallery
Baltimore-based music and arts collective Wham City bring their comedy tour to New York City for one night only. Hosted at Showpaper’s 42nd Street Gallery, there is no question that this night is going to get absurd. Everybody’s favorite and loveable kook Dan Deacon performs comedy (and hopefully some tunes!) alongside the hilarious Ed Schrader and many others with musical performances by The Creepers and The Ram Ones.
Black Dice, Blues Control, DJ Avey TareSaturday Nov. 20The Schoolhouse
Oh dear, and I would be a liar if I said that I wasn’t going to see Black Dice and Blues Control play at the Schoolhouse, which may be my favorite venue in Bushwick. That dude from Animal Collective and who married Kría Brekkan is DJing.

Toro Y Moi, Cloud Nothings
So Percussion and Dan Deacon
Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy
Atlas Sound
Peaches Christ Superstar
Kurt Vile and the Violators
